This stuff works!

A commercially available, big name substrate turned the GH hardness in my tank off the wall and, not wanting to start over from scratch, I decided to try these pillows out. There was notable improvement the first day and by very early the second day the hardness was back to normal. Just be sure you use enough pads for the size of your aquarium.

Yes, I recommend this product.

We have "hard water" and had tried to "soften" it for our aquarium for years. Nothing seemed to work. One "pillow" stablized the water and reduced the white spots and helped to maintain the clearness of the aquarium. Excellent.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Good alternative

This is the only way to soften water that I know off without a peat filter or RO/DI unit. Follow directions using pillow longer than 48 hours between recharges depletes effectiveness. The best part is water retains most of the minerals. Don't have to add the chemicals that a RO/DI unit removes.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I was skeptical that this would work as well as it is advertised to be. But I am totally convinced now. I have very hard water. I first tried using only Seachem Prime. That barely moved the GH. After 48 hours running the softening pillow, the GH dropped from 14 down to 6. I suppose the real test will be whether or not it keeps it down, but I don't see why it won't.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Worked as described

Our water is very hard, so I bought a three pack of these water softener pillows and placed two of them in a small filter box for 24 hours. In that time the general hardness dropped from 161 ppm to 107 ppm. Using them that way allows me to remove them and recharge easily without having to open the canister filter. Worked exactly as planned

Yes, I recommend this product.

I have Hard-water but low PH 6.2, would this help me make the water softer and raise the PH?

  1. Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, this product is not formulated to help balance your PH. We have provided a link below that may be used with this product to raise your PH. https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4046

Smaller qty of aquarium salt sold?

  1. Thank you for your question. We do apologize at this time our smallest container of aquarium salt would be a 50 gallon mix.

Additional sizes?

  1. Thank you for your question. The Water Softener Pillow bag measures 6.5" wide by 5" long. This will not replace the filter media and should be used in conjunction with other filter media/pads. If you do not have room for the pillow and pads, you will want to alternate between the Water Softener Pillow and filter pads.

Where do you place the water softner pillow

  1. just put it in the path of the water flowing out from the filter box, Recharging is easy just rinse and place in jar with Aquarian salt about 2 Tbsp. for 2 hours

Where do you place the water softner pillow

  1. This product works the same as a home water softener, removes calcium and magnesium that make water "hard". Instructions for recharging in salt water are in the package with the pillows. I place mine in the filter compartment of my Penguin external filter against the filter pad for about two days. Water has to flow through the pillow for it to work. Hope this helps!

Place it before or after filter media?

  1. are you rinsing the pillow and yes with very hard water it take a long time to see results My new RO system drops the PH and hardness of the water

API water softener pillow

Does hardness go back up while the pillow is recharging, or if it is removed, or is the change permanent for that water?

    1. hardness will not go back up unless you add hard water. Rinse before recharging

Should I buy two of these for a 30 gal. tank?

    1. I have a 29 G tank, PLENTY left... 2 drops per gallon. :) treats 265G

    What about the water fluctuations?

    1. I didn't experience extremes but the parameters did fluctuate. Where I live the pH of mt tap water is super high. I haven't found any chemical that has been able to stabalize. My research so far is telling me to filter my water with an ro unit. I am going to begin filtering over peat and collecting rain water. However as I understand it I need to be able to lower that kh in order to maintain stable water conditions. Filtering isn't a horrible notion, but I will also need to reintroduce trace elements in order to keep my plants and fish alive and healthy I am beginning to wonder if its worth it or if i should just start keeping all hard water fish.
