Good, but not perfect

It's hard to find a reliable heater. For the most part, these are pretty dependable as I have 6 of them. One has stopped working totally and another flaked out on me one time raising my tank temperature to 90 degrees before I caught it. Luckily my engineer goby didn't cook. That heater hasn't acted up since, but I put it in a 220g in the basement with a room temp of 68 degrees. Would have never thought a 200w would keep 260+ gallons 9 degrees above ambient.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I’ve had this heater for 5 years now and it just went defective...but for 5 years that is quite a long time that it was successful and for that reason I just replaced the defective one for the same exact one. Boy does 5 years go by fast.

No, I do not recommend this product.

No longer reliable brand - Won't turn off

Unfortunately, I have a ton of these and at least a half dozen won't turn off. I've resorted to using them only when they are undersized and unplug in the summer - otherwise I would cook my fish.

No, I do not recommend this product.

The light on front is very easy to tell that the heater is working properly. Keeps water temperature right where you set it.

A really top quality heater

I chose it because it has a lot of positive reviews here and elsewhere. I also chose it because it has an adjustable thermostat - that's vital when you are starting up a new tank - higher to get the bacteria going and then lower once it's cycled and you are ready for your aqua babies. I have been using my first one for a few weeks and it holds the temp stable and steady. It also fits nicely down in a Fluval Spec V (where there isn't a lot of room to put your heater but it *does* fit right on top of the pump!). I wanted a reliable heater and I do believe I found it. I was so pleased with it that I bought a second one. If anything changes, I will update, but I really feel confident that I chose the best heater possible in an affordable price range.

Yes, I recommend this product.

The Aqueon Pro heaters have become my favorites. They're very good, though not perfect. They hold an even temperature, but the setting knob is not calibrated well. To get 75 degrees in one tank, I had to set it to 80. In another, to 70. But, once set, they do hold steady, without noticeable temperature fluctuations. They blend in with a black background, which is great, except for the bright blue knob. What is that about? And with a plastic housing, I'm much less worried about cracking it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Long time fish owner. I have had many heaters. From box store shelves. All were glass submersible. Nothing lasted. I went without heat for years. Fish lost there color and became lazy. This year I decided to work harder on my tanks, added fish and I knew I needed heat again. Almost two months now and it's still perfect temp. I have about an eight degree differnce I needed, so I set it for four degree differnce the first night, then a few days later I turn the lever up a few more degrees, and have no touched it since.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Temp Setting

  1. That is correct, with a caveat. This heater measures the water temperature to determine when to turn itself on / off, however if the ambient air temp (room temperature) is very low the heater will have to work harder to achieve the desired water temperature. Note, this is also true with an open top tank (no lid). In either case, you will need to purchase a heater on the high end of the range to achieve optimal tropical aquarium temperature results.

50W - Up to 20 Gallons

  1. Yes, this is the heater size I'd recommend for a 5g aquarium. Really anything from 2.5g - 20g, depending on how warm / cool the room the aquarium is being kept in. However, anything below 5g you should start considering a 10w and anything above 10g you should start considering a 100w.

The write-up says 4 degree increments. Is this only adjustable in 4 degree increments or is it infinitely adjustable withing the specified range?

  1. It is infinitely adjustable within a specific range.

Would this heat a 3 gallon tank well?

  1. There is actually a pre-set Aqueon Pro Heater that would be a better choice for your particular setup. Not only is the wattage aligned better for a 3 gallon tank, but the size is much smaller and will be easier to conceal. It is the Aqueon Submersible Mini Aquarium Heater (SKU 1554077).

Can I use this in a large trash can that I use for mixing saltwater for changes?

  1. I assume you are preheating the water for addition to your tank. I think it's a great idea. Remember to leave the heater off and in the water awhile (they recommend 30 mins.) before pluging in . Then after turning power off let it sit in the water before removing it. These are tough heaters and a plastic can w/o anything to bang into should work fine. Equalized water temp is wonderful for fish.

Would this heater be ok in a 5 gallon tank?

  1. I think if it were me, I'd go with a 25 watt heater for a 5 gallon.

I have a 75 gallon tank and am looking for a proper heater for tropical fish.(around the 72 to 88 degree range) what is the best heater for my tank?

  1. For that large a tank, I would go with two heaters instead of one. Two 200 or 250 watt heaters should do it. I used to have two 150 watt heaters in a 55g I had.

whats the difference between the 150 & 200 aqua pro heater measrements the same

  1. 150 Watts is enough for your 75 gallon tank if you have good circulation, so I do not think that you have to swap them out. Alternately, If you do not have good circulation you should install a second heater at the other end of yoour 75 Gallon tank ! This will also give you the safety off having a backup heater already in place.

Will this heater keep the set temperture in a cool room?

  1. Actually, bettas do best at 78 - 80 F on a regular basis, and may need to be 80 - 82 in some cases, like when treating for an illness. In a 6g tank, a 50w heater should be fine. My home heat is set at 63 at night, and usually not more than 68 during the day, and my Aqueon Pro 50w heater, set for 76F in a 14g tank near the front door, maintains the water at 77. I really like these heaters, by the way. So far they are my favorites.

100 watts vs. 150/200 watts

  1. I would buy the 200 watt if you need that size heater. Get the aqueon pro if you can it will never let you down.
