Feeding For optimum results, feed daily as often as possible, the amount your fish will consume within two to three minutes. For mid-water and bottom feeders allow Hikari First Bites to soak in a cup of aquarium water before feeding. This will cause the food to sink more rapidly allowing these fry better access. Livebearers (ovoviviparous) can consume Hikari First Bites right after birth. Egg layers (oviparous) utilize their yolk sack for nutrition right after birth. Start feeding Hikari First Bites right before the yolk sack is fully consumed. Care should be taken to avoid over-feeding. Excess food can cause water quality problems which may result in heightened stress or serious illness.

I've been using this product for several years. Currently I have between 40 and 50 Bachardi fry in my 120 gal tank. They survive just fine with two feedings per day

if you love breeding fish this stuff is a must! The only caution is it takes patience and care getting it out of the package as the food is fine as dust.

Yes, I recommend this product.

For the price vs the amount you get, take a good quality flake food, pour it in a plastic zipper baggie and run the rolling pin over, it's a lost more cost effective, especially when you are feeding almost 600 baby koi.

My Platy Fry Love First Bites!

Andre1106961

I currently have 6 platy fry and I had no real sustainable food for them. They nibbled on algae until they were big enough to eat the adult food. Now with First Bites, my fry can get a reliable source of real food they can depend on. After feeding for a couple of days, my fry's activity levels have gone up, and they seem eager to eat in the morning. The only problem with First Bites is that the food is a fine powder. This is perfect for newborn to very tiny fry, but for older fry like I have, it can sometimes be too tiny for them to notice. Overall it's a great product.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Part of my fry feedings

I use this product as part of my three daily feedings of my fry. Used in rotation with baby brine shrimp and the canned cyclops. I lose very few fry and they seem to grow much faster with the combination of foods. I mix it with water and deliver it with Two Little Fishies Julian's Thing. Makes it easier to change the fry over to flake food later also.

Yes, I recommend this product.

what form does this come in?

  1. liquid form

is it a powder

  1. First Bites is a very small pellet that is designed to stay suspended in the water so the baby fish can fine it readily.

could this work for baby gost shrimp?

  1. Yes, First Bites can work for baby ghost shrimp. We suggest smaller more frequent feedings and also using a Mini Algae Wafer up to two times per week depending on the number of shrimp you have.

Is this a suitable food for marine tanks?

  1. Katy626, Thank you for your question. The First Bites 10 Grams can be given to all newborn fish regardless of the type of aquarium. This can be fed to both fresh and saltwater baby fish. mal

Does this food work for betta fry?

  1. Good luck with that! I had tried to breed them with limited success until I set up a tank outside one spring. Just a basic setup with undergravel filter. I used a divider in the tank to keep the male separated from the females. The ley to keeping the fry alive is lots of microbes, and outside it was easy for nature to provide that. I ran the tank a couple of months and let it get built up with algae and though it looked murky, it was the perfect environment for the fry to thrive. I had over a hundred that grew up and were eventually sold to a local pet store.

Would this be a good food for Betta fry as well? If not, what would you suggest feeding to Betta newborns?

  1. Thank you for your question. This food is suitable for all types of fry.
