Alk drops so fast

I was using Red Sea salt mix (blue bucket) before but I decided to try LiveAquaria for saving some money. Beside of its affordable price I also was attracted by its trace elements. When I started using this salt mix I loved it. The salt dissolves fast, the water clear off in about 5 minutes and the Alk given was 10.1 witch I found perfect for my expectations. After the 4th time I use it I started detecting something weird. The fresh saltwater I prepared each with this salt mix had a less Alk level than the time before. Now its Alk is 8.1. In the aquarium the Alk dropped from 8.1 to 6.3kh in just 12 days. Alk drops in the time due the calcification of the corals but it seems that this salt just drops its Alk since the very moment you open the bucket. I'm gonna mix thit salt with Instant Ocean Reef Crystals for seeing what happen. I will post an update of it.

Good product, poor packaging

Whatever money I saved by buying this salt was left on the floor of my garage. To put 58 pounds of salt in a 1.5 mil plastic bag is just wrong (my TV instructions came in a 3 mil bag). I tried to "roll it" out of the box to "roll it" into a 6 gallon plastic sealable bucket. It was a mistake.....

Yes, I recommend this product.

Corals like it but...

I’ve used Red Sea and Tropic Marin prior to this. It mixes well and my corals are doing well. My only complaint is that although the initial price is lower for the Live Aquaria mix, I need to use a little over a cup more to achieve the same salinity (.1025) as my former mixes.

I like this salt because the kH is around 8.5 so it doesn't alter my tanks chemistry. I would give it 5 stars but they need to pack the 205 gallon box in separate bags. I put the salt into a bucket and it is hard to try to transfer a 60 pound bag of salt into a bucket, then you are still left with some left in the bag. IO and reef crystals figured it out. Even still, this is a great salt. I keep my tank around 8.2kH and 425 calcium. After a 20% water change the levels are consistent.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Good Salt! But, Poor Packaging!

Packaging is poor is my only complaint. You get one huge bag with a removable zip tie. I feel this is going to allow containment into the bag. Needs to come in smaller 50 gal batch bags like similar companies do and actually sealed not zip tied!!! I put my salt in 5gal containers with sealed lids to stop moisture and dust from getting inside to reduce containment's from changing the results of my fresh water. And trying to poor it into the 5gal bucket not fun so you have to sit and scoop........ My zip tie was loose also.

Bought 4 boxes based on positive reviews and good pricing. I've had my 125 gallon mixed reef going for 8 years and have always used Instant Ocean reef salt. Over the past 3 months I have been slowly switching to Drs. Foster and Smith salt and since then my corals have looked progressively worse and water less clear. All parameters are in check and nothing has changed except for the salt. Not sure if I got a bad box, or something else is wrong, but at this point it's the only change I've made. I now have 3 boxes which I'm not sure what I'll do with, water that is not crystal clear (even when running filter sock and carbon) and multiple corals that I'm worried will not recover. My green star polyps have even stopped coming out, those things are typically impossible to kill. If you try this salt, don't order 4 boxes at once like I did.

Love the salt, HATE the packaging

So this is really good salt. I'll take it over the other stuff any day. Dissolves easy, good numbers, I like it. The bad, its 1 big bag with a zip tie in a box. So if you don't have a bucket, better get one. I read that they were doing this back in sept, but were looking at individual bags. Well not yet. I'd pay 1.00 more to get this in 4 or 5 bags people!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Will this salt be appropriate for a Moon jellyfish aquarium?

  1. Thank you for your question. This salt it appropriate for all types of reef aquariums including jellyfish

So does the 205 gallon box truly mix up to that volume at 1.026 salinity?

  1. None of them claim at 1.026 they claim on the bucket of instant ocean to make it at 1.021 if i remember correctly it on the bucket or box. This Salt probably no different i cannot say for sure this is my first box.

205 gallon salts

  1. The bag is pretty heavy duty. I'd suggest twisting it off and adding a large clamp to keep it shut. This has worked for me.

How long can you store this salt for once it is mixed?

  1. Tested first batch. Alk dropped from 8.9 to 8.2 after 3 days. Will continue to test, and try additional batches. Similar to Fritz.

does the Liveaquaria salt in the 205 gallon box have individual packages inside like reef crysyals

  1. No one big bag that zip tied
