Tetra Safe Start Plus creates a biologically active environment to allow fast introduction of fish into newly set-up fish aquariums. Tetra Safe Start Plus reduces dangerous ammonia and nitrite and prevents new tank syndrome for a healthy start for fish in all freshwater aquariums. Contains live bacteria that start working immediately to provide a safe environment for new fish. Tetra Safe Start Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating. "Cycling" your tank means growing the correct, healthy bacteria on a new filtration system to remove dangerous toxins. New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. This concentrated formula speeds up the cycling process by accelerating the establishment of beneficial bacteria from the start for instant, safe results.

I've read many forums where either ppl say they couldn't cycle a tank without it and most say they also use media from an established tank with it and others say it's snake oil. I've tried or twice and won't buy it again I think it's a waste of money. I think using media from an established tank is what actually helped seed the tanks. And not at all this stuff. Won't be buying a 3rd time.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Great product to help start a new tank. I do "rescues" of betta and dont have the time to cycle a tank as they need a home quick. When setting up a new tank, and I have 2.5 gallon tanks; I use about 1 tablespoon. It is also good for quelling ammonia spikes existing tanks. The price point for this size is great, I was happy to pay it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I had purchased Stresszyme from another vender and used the whole bottle without it making one bit of difference on my tank chemicals. I ordered the Safe Start+ from Fosters and Smith and within one dose my ammonia and nitrites were down where they are suppose to be. Really works great and would highly recommend.

Yes, I recommend this product.

This works! I use this in conjunction with adding additional bacteria from another one of my aquariums. I have used this exclusively in the past to seed new setups and it does jump-start the cycle. Two things to note. I wouldn't add a LOT of fish right away, I would say to add 2 inches of fish for every 10 gallons and then wait until you see good solid nitrate readings to know for sure your tank has cycled and then introduce additional fish at 2 inches of fish per week to populate your tank. This gives bacteria time to catch up to the bioload of the fish you are adding. Another thing to note...this product is dated so be sure to check on the bottom of the bottle to make sure it has not expired. One last thing....'Dr.'s Foster & Smith' also offer a bacteria in 1 gallon container which I have found works just as well as Tetra SafeStart and is much cheaper. I like having a gallon on hand to add when I do water changes or have to throw together an emergency hospital tank.

Yes, I recommend this product.

PRODUCT SHELF LIFE

  1. I have found that the product expires a year and a half to two years from the date of purchase. If I buy from my local pet store, I've found shorter expiration dates. But typically, if you order from this website, the expiration dates are much later. Hope this helps!

How much do I use?

  1. I have safely used one tablespoon to a small 2.5 gallon tank, maybe just cut that in half. My information shows it wont cause problems if it isnt exact.

How to use Tetra Safe Start with the Aqueon Betta Bow 2.5

  1. Water changes are better for bettas than anything. And aas far as the filter depens on what type you have don't replace everything in the filter, the sponge or media needs to stay. usually just the carbon gets changed

Can I mix Tetra Safe Start with Aqueon Water Conditioner and Aqueon Ammonia Neutralizer?

  1. You want treat your water with Aqueon Water Conditioner add it to your tank. Tetra Safe Start starts the nitrogen cycle , it turns ammonia into nitrite and nitrite turns into nitrate. You should do fishless cycle. There are test kits for nitrite and nitrate. Ammonia Neutralizer actually turns the harmful ammonia into the harmless form. This for only for an emergency, if your ammonia levels are high you can use it. It can give you false readings, when you test ammonia. Goldfish need to thrive at a ph level of 7.5 and the temperature no lower than 65 degrees. Keep adding Safe Start everyday until ammonia, nitrite, nitrate are at 0ppm. This is the time to add your fish. Ammonia Neutralizers can disrupt the cycle process, don't use it. Good luck with your tank.
