Directions For Use: Pour bedding into terrarium and landscape as desired. A depth of one to two inches is recommended. Remove animal waste and soiled bedding daily. Replace bedding monthly or as needed. HUMIDITY- it may be necessary to add humidity by misting depending on the species of reptile. If misting is necessary, the bedding will absorb any excess moisture which will then be released back into the terrarium over time.

Caused Shedding Problems

I tried this out with my leopard gecko for 3 months. When I did, he had problems shedding. He still had a humid hide and everything else was the same. After I got tired of picking skin out from his toes, I tried switching back to repti-carpet. I haven't had a problem with shedding since.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I use this substrate for my adult bearded dragon. It is way better than sand because it doesn't have as much dust and he doesn't try to eat it. Perfect for desert reptiles!

Clean and Dust free ...

This would seem to be good for desert reptiles as it says in its description, it does seem to be dust free and ground to a sand like texture. I actually bought it to be used as Tumbling Media for my reloading, so its ground a bit too fine, but when mixed with Corn Media seems to work good. AND its made in the USA!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great substrate choice

I was using coconut husk/sand mix for substrate - unless it was spritzed with water continually, it left the room surfaces dusty and never smelled fresh. Since switching to this product in my tortoise pens, the dust is very minimal and the room smells fresher. It's easy to sift through and cages stay clean.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Do bearded dragons enjoy this bedding? Anyone with experience?

  1. Thank you for your question. Based off of other customer reviews on the Zilla Ground English Walnut Shells, Bearded Dragons do enjoy this bedding.

Would this be recommended and safe for bearded dragons?

  1. Thank you for your question. The Zilla Ground English Walnut Shells are safe to use with Bearded Dragons.

Is ground walnut shells bedding good for a corn snake?

  1. For a snake, a better substrate would be aspen wood shavings. SKU: 1525565 or 1558943

can i use this for my beardie

  1. As a juvenile I would suggest reptile carpeting until your beardie is a little older. Once your bearde is older and no longer at risk of taking in a bunch of substrate along with its food the walnut shells are a fantastic substrate for beardies. You just need to be extra cautious with juvenile bearded dragons.

Is the walnut shell substrate good for the Russian Tortoise?

  1. Thank you for your question. The Zilla Ground English Walnut Shells can be used with all desert species of lizards, snakes, turtles, tortoises and arachnids. The substrate should be deep enough that your tortoise can burrow into it.

I'm told to be careful because my beardie may eat the sand or walnuts and get sick. Is walnut safe if ingested?

  1. No it will cause impaction!

Can i use this for my Russian tortoise?

  1. Yes this is a perfect substrate and I also know some people will recommend a equal by weight with play sand to keep it moist. I mostly just use the substrate plain and try to spray it with water when its looking dry and mix it up. Don't let it get too dry because then it will get dusty and they can get respiratory problems.

Safe for leo gecko

  1. Thank you for your question Jenny99. This is largely personal preference. Some people will say not to use it and others will say that it is the best thing to use. There really isn’t much different than using this or sand from an animal health standpoint. Just keep an eye on them and make sure that when they eat they are not ingesting a lot of the bedding. This is the same with any substrate. If your gecko looks to take in a lot of the bedding while they eat you should use a reptile carpet liner in place of any other substrate.

How much of the walnut shells would I need to purchase for a 50 gallon aquarium for my bearded dragon?

  1. I bought 50 qts... it worked well for me... the tank is only half full, but you need room for branches and things to climb on. ( its about 90lbs, or 30L)

how much ground walnut shells do I need for a 50 gallon tank

  1. Thank you for your question tweetiebug. It will depend on how deep you like the substrate in your terrarium, but typically a 25QT bag will work for the initial fill then you top off from their as needed.
