Turtles are cold-blooded, meaning they rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. So while it may look like a turtle is just chilling out on a rock, basking actually helps them warm up, which is key to maintaining healthy body functions.

That means it’s up to you to make sure your pet’s habitat has a convenient, cozy turtle basking platform to keep them happy and healthy. At Petco, we’re here to help. To encourage basking, you’ll want to create a habitat that mimics your turtle’s natural environment, complete with easy access to dry, warm basking areas.

For aquatic turtles, that could mean a piece of driftwood, a stable rock or a commercial turtle dock. Consider building a sloped water exit area nearby out of substrate like large, smooth, aquarium gravel. Terrestrial turtles simply require something that’s elevated and easy to climb, such as a stepped basking platform. Also install a special incandescent basking bulb to warm the area so your turtle can keep their body temperature within a healthy range. Don’t forget a thermometer, to help you monitor and maintain the optimal temperature for your pet.
