Ideal testers

The only way to make these even easier is to have them do it themselves! These API test kits are so much more accurate than the strips and so much more accurate than any other brands I have ever found. These are my go-to testers for every day testing, when doing water changes, when my fish are acting funny, and just about every occasion. I would never use anything else but the API test kits.

Yes, I recommend this product.

This is a good product for the money. Not as refined as far as readings as some other products but still is a good indicator if your nitrates are running high.

Yes, I recommend this product.

API has been supplying freshwater and marine aquarists with quality supplies for many, many years. The Ammonia test kit mentioned here is one such product. As test kits go this one is a good quality test kit. It's inexpensive, comes with easy to read instructions and illustrations, simple to use and comes complete with everything one needs to test their aquarium for ammonia. API's competitors also have some very good products however I think API has a larger selection and better line of quality products at very reasonable prices. I've been using them over 10 years now without any issues. Their quality speaks for itself. Good product

Completely un-realistic and false readings

This Ammonia testing product measures not only free ammonia (toxic), but also ammonium (non-toxic). Any water conditioner such as Prime will convert chloramine from tap water into chlorine and ammonium. Chlorine is further broken down by the conditioner. Therefore, the readings from this kit will never reach true safe readings as long as I am using treated tap water, even though it it completely safe in reality. My API test says that my levels have been at 4.0ppm for a month now!!! My mollies should definitely be dead by now!! Use a product that measures only free ammonia (toxic), such as SeaChem's AmmoniaAlert card that you can stick to the side of your tank, it's also cheaper than this kit. It reads that my ammonia levels are at 0.05 ppm or less, which makes much more sense and would explain why my fish are still alive. As a Design Enginner for a major emissions monitoring systems manufacturer for companies that have to report their pollutants to the EPA, I should have seen this coming, but I guess I was hoping for better quality without thinking about considering how great most other products from foster and smith tend to be.

No, I do not recommend this product.
