The secret to successfully keeping African Cichlids begins with Eco Complete African Cichlid Substrates. These mineralogically complete substrates contain aragonite to maintain the high pH African Cichlids need. Eco Complete Cichlid Substrates add calcium, magnesium, carbonate and more to recreate the African Rift Lake environment. Naturally buffers aquarium water to combat downward pH drift in African Cichlid tanks without the constant use of additives. Eco Complete African Cichlid Substrates are packed with live, water-purifying bacteria to jumpstart the cycling process. Its high internal surface area allows more room for water purifying bacteria to thrive. Also packed in a water conditioner to remove chlorine/chloramines and reduce fish stress.

  • - Natural buffers maintain a high pH African Cichlids enjoy
  • - Packed with living bacteria to cycle new cichlid aquariums

After reading the reviews I purchased 2 bags of this substrate and have replaced it in less than a month. They tell you not to rinse it but I could not get the white powder out of the water column. Every time I cleaned something or moved anything the tank would be full of white powder. Have since replaced with another Caribsea product and my cichlids are very happy

No, I do not recommend this product.

I love this sand, it looks beautiful. HOWEVER, you have to be so patient. it says on the bag do not rinse. I added my sand and it took almost 2 weeks to clear up, i used the clarifier and it did work, i t just took almost 2 weeks to fully clear up. Be patient and you will love it.

I used this sand for my African hap / peacock tank. They love it.. My only complaint about the product is that the bag says that rinsing is not necessary - that is simply NOT true. It definitely needs rinsing. It took over a month to get all the dust out of the gravel. My mechanical filtration took a beating in the meantime. But, once it was clean, it's been great. So, anyone who buys this definitely needs to rinse it first.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received my sand. It is prettier than what I expected I have a 90 Gal tank so I am filtering the tank and waiting for the fogginess to clear from the gravel and water. How long should this take?

Yes, I recommend this product.

I use this substrate for my Molly tank. Brooklyn NY water is 6.7 p.h out of the tap but the sand has maintained the ph at 8, and my fish seem very happy and healthy. They spend a lot of time sifting through the sand looking for snacks. It looks beautiful and does not get sucked up during light vacuuming. Initially, the water was very cloudy for two days with a filter running. I would not want to add this to an established tank. I'm currently cycling a filter for a rabbit snail habitat and will purchase this substrate for them. The high PH, shell pieces and small size of the sand should make for very happy rabbit snails.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I haven't had an aquarium in years but when I saw the products being offered by CaribSea I had no choice but to start a new tank just so I could put this stuff in it. The tank has only been up and running for about 3 weeks yet all of the parameters are in their proper place and can only be attributed to the substrate. When CaribSea says Eco-Complete, they mean it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

First and foremost I love the look of the sand. The sand is mostly black with some white mixed into it. I purchased 3 bags for my 55 gallon and it gave me a nice fill. I had already had two seeded media filters and let them run for approximately 2 weeks after adding the sand. I purchased 6 Yellow Labs which look amazing against the black sand. The fish seem very happy. I'm currently waiting to get 12 or so Demasoni to finish the tank off. My tank was cloudy for maybe the first day but I added all three clarity packs. The sand has a distinctive odor to it which is not too pleasant but I attribute that to the bacteria that's in the sand. I did not wash the sand and followed the advice on the bag. I would buy again. Also pictured are the cichlid stones (15 pack).

No, I do not recommend this product.

Can this substrate be used for Discus and Angel Fish?

  1. I wouldn't myself. This substrate is for high pH fish, like African cichlids. Discus and angels wanted softer water with low pH levels. Use a neutral substrate.

Does rinsing the 'White' Cichlid sand make it ineffective for pH help.

  1. No, rinsing won't effect the pH influence of the sand. However, if the bags have live bacteria (like Eco-Complete), then use de-chlorinated water.

Is "Gravel" the only one i can use with an undergravel filter

  1. yes sand will clog the filter in undergravel. Other filters are better anyway get this substrate then get different filters.

Switching from basic multi-colored gravel to Carib Eco-Complete African cichlid substrate
