This hydrometer arrived not a day too soon! My new saltwater aquarium had a reading of more than 1.032, but thanks to the hydrometer, I realized the problem and brought the salinity level down to 1.025. I love how simple it is to take a reading and can do it several times a day easily.

Yes, I recommend this product.

15 year reef keeper wanted extra hydrometer near mix tank. Hydrometer reads full scale 1.032 with 1.010 salinity. Yes i made sure no bubble were stuck to the hydrometer full submersion and shake several several times. After many failed attempts I went to the scientific/lab testing with measured amounts of salt and comparison to other hydrometer. My old deep six is dead on with a prepared salt water solution. Best part is the Drs. Foster Smith Guarantee, you hope for the best and are glad you shopped Drs. when it does not pan out.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Filling from the Bottom

  1. Thank you for your question. Not filling the hydrometer correctly can affect the reading. Please see the instructions below. Instructions: Before use, condition hydrometer by soaking it in saltwater for 24 hours. Step 1 - Slowly fill the Instant Ocean Hydrometer by dipping bottom corner fill port below water surface until water flows up and over inner weir. Step 2 - Dislodge air bubbles by gently tapping hydrometer or pointer. Air bubbles on the pointer may result in inaccurate results. Step 3 - Place the hydrometer on a level surface and read specific gravity (inside scale) and salinity (outside scale). Care: Rinse thoroughly in freshwater after each use to prevent mineral/salt buildup which can affect accuracy. Salt and calcium deposits that accumulate on the pointer will result in incorrect results. If crystallization occurs inside the unit, soak in lukewarm water or vinegar for 30-minutes, rinse with freshwater and air dry.

does the hydrometer come with a calibration certificate

  1. No, it does not.

what are the safe levels for cichlids. salinity-specific gravity

  1. I wouldn't use a hydrometer to keep cichlids as they don't require salt to thrive. Instead monitor the ph and hardness or the water ph is most important keep stable between 7.8 to 9.0
