Oxbow Oat Hay is harvested before the oat develops into a seed-the way small herbivores need it and like it! Oat Hay, like all grass hay, meets the nutritional needs of herbivores with high fiber and low protein. This appealing alternative contains savory husks full of both flavor and fiber, making it a favorite for many pets. Blend Oat Hay with other Oxbow grass hays to create a nutty-tasting and nutritious combination

  • - Oat Hay is companion forage that is similar in nutritional analysis to the western timothy. Your animals will love the immature oat grain that is contained in the seed head and will benefit greatly from the fiber in the leaf and stem. Oat Hay is a good source of fiber and also gives variety to your animal's diet. This product also makes a good bedding alternative to wheat straw. The stage of maturity at harvest determines the development of the seed head. If the hay is harvested immaturely, at the early bloom stage, the actual oat kernel is not mature. The seed heads consist primarily of oat husks, which are rich in fiber. It is at this early stage that Oxbow harvests its Oat Hay . The result is light green/tan hay with flaky oat husks at the top. Although there is no mature oat kernel present, the hay smells like oats and guinea pigs and rabbits love it.
  • - Hay is absolutely vital to the health of small herbivores. It provides not only nutrition, but environmental enrichment that mimics the animal's natural habitat. It also provides a long-strand fiber source that is needed to improve the digestive and intestinal functions by stimulating the digestive system. When animals are fed free-choice hay, it promotes their natural chewing behavior, which helps prevent molar spurs and other dental problems that are so common in these small herbivores.

Growing and Mature Animals: Unlimited amounts Oat Hay can be fed free choice to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, prairie dogs and other herbivores as an alternative to timothy, orchard grass, and organic meadow hay. Free-choice means that the feed is available at all times. If they finish what you give them, you need to give them more! Not only should hay be used for nutritional purposes, but also for mental stimulation and the promotion of natural foraging behavior. Oat Hay is unique that it offers a high degree of foraging entertainment. Fill an infant wading pool with oat hay and let the guinea pigs loose. Rabbits like to eat hay in their litter box. Fill a cardboard tube, basket or animal-safe toy with hay and place it in your pet's favorite spot. Put a layer of hay on the bottom of the cage and hide food/treats in the hay for foraging. Put hay everywhere: the hutch, the corner, behind the couch, etc.

I have been ordering Oxbow hay for over a year now. Lately, I have noticed that there is much waste (about 1/4 of the bag that is dusty and so fine that it just goes through the cage when I put it in the hay feeder). The rabbits love the hay (like oat and botanical, but so much waste). :(

No, I do not recommend this product.

Good deal here at Drs. F&S

It's Oxbow that is responsible for the quality control here and I wish these bags came with less "Dust" at the bottom. Sure, some is crunched up in handling but I can not believe when some bags have like 20% unuseable loose junk a the bottom. It 's good quality oat hay and the piggies crave it as part of a healthy hay diet for adult pigs - which is dominated by low protein Orchard Grass. I used to buy bales but haven't seen flakes of oat hay from local Livestock feed stores. Because I have only 2-3 pigs and not 20 anymore :)

Yes, I recommend this product.

Fresh

My rabbit loves this hay. All hay from Drs Foster and Smith arrives fresher than you find in most stores. I find that oat hay in particular triggers less allergies than other hays. It makes a good addition to my rabbit's diet. I only wish it came with more size options.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great for picky hay eaters

Oxbow oat hay is great for bunnies who are picky about their hay, it's more tempting than regular timothy hay and oxbow is a genuinely great company who provides high quality products for our small furry friends. It's also a great variety for bunnies who do eat their timothy hay normally. My three house bunnies love their timothy hay but I like to mix it up, they love this oat hay as well. It's long, thick strands help them chew more which wear down their ever growing teeth and move their guts. If you have a bunny who you'd like to give something different to, or you have a bunny who doesn't eat much hay - this is great to use.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Yucky bag

My bunny usually loves Oxbow oat hay. The bag I received recently was more like straw for a cow. Some pieces were nearly 2 feet long. It was thick, coarse and not in a good way (my bunny likes seed pods and crunchy food). It was yellow and only a few pieces had any green. The customer service agent told me I would get a refund this time but next time I would have to send it back for a refund. She said this is a natural product which makes the consistency not always the same. I get that but this does not resemble oat hay in any way. The bag on the website shows GREEN on the front for the hay. Not nasty yellow. At least I got a refund for the bag and normally Oxbow is good quality.

No, I do not recommend this product.

quality has declined

This used to be a bun favorite at my house. Recent orders have gone from a green, softer hay to mostly dried straw. Climate conditions and water rationing have probably impacted this product, but at this point it isn't worth the money. My buns pick out the green and leave the majority of hay, which is used in their litter box. I hope the quality returns.

Order your oat hay now!

I recently ordered a couple bags of Oxbow oat hay. It was the best quality oat hay yet! I just ordered eight more bags! If you are in the market for oat hay, this current supply is PERFECT to trim down those points on bunny's teeth and it will keep them occupied for a while. Huge, long strands. Get it while the gettin's good!

Yes, I recommend this product.
