Description

Please note that the product information displayed is provided by manufacturers, suppliers and other third parties and is not independently verified by Petco.

Flourish Excel is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. Because the processes of producing photosynthetic intermediates and building onto them occur simultaneously, one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel, either alone or in conjunction with CO2. The combination is particularly ideal for situations when continuing to add CO2 could result in dangerously low pH levels. Flourish Excel also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron, which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron.

  • - Bioavailable organic carbon source for the planted aquarium
  • - Use as an alternative to CO2 injection or in addition to it
  • - Introduces photosynthetic intermediates

I have multiple tanks with plants in it, and use Excel in all of my tanks. I use it for 2 reasons: 1. A way to add liquid carbon to the tanks that don't have-won't get CO2. 2. A way to keep algae away and at bay in all of my tanks. I do have a 75 gallon set up with tons and tons of plants, a pressurized CO2 system and use the EI system for fertilization. I have had some nasty bba and staghorn algae outbreaks from before the CO2 and in between tweaking the CO2 for stability. I tried to use peroxide to kill the established algae on my plants (including a few anubias) but the peroxide burned many leaves along with killing the algae. So I started adding Excel to my tank on a daily basis and at the first (higher dose of 40 ml) for a week and then alternating the higher 40 ml twice a week with 20 ml every other day. I have been very impressed in the lack of algae in the tank. and have been keeping up the Excel regimen since January. When I started getting some hair algae in my 5,5 gallon shrimp tank, I started adding Excel (normal dose) daily and it also worked to remove and keep the algae from coming back.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great for plants and algae reduction

I have heavily planted tanks and have used Excel for years. What I found is that it's best when you start at the standard dose and then slowly work up to double dosage. At this dose, it helps to keep algae under control (if the phosphate and nitrate levels are kept in check). Above the double dose, certain plants like Vallisneria are sensitive to it and will die back. So be careful.

I have been using Flourish Excel for over two years in my heavily planted 55gal and 10gal tanks. I've been using it this long because it is a great alternative to pressurized CO2. Only downside is that it is rather expensive for large scale aquariums such as my 55gal. It is much more economical to go with pressurized CO2 but Flourish Excel fits my current needs much better.

Kills snails

Flourish Excel kills snails. I used it as directed in my well established heavily planted 90 gallon freshwater aquarium. It killed all of my Ramshorn snails in a matter of days which resulted in a water quality problem and the loss of a few fish before I realized what was going on. It was the worst tank problem I have had in over 50 years of fish keeping. The product needs to be labeled better so users will know the risks involved. Do not use it if you have snails in your tank.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I got Excel primarily to help control Black Beard Algae. With time and patience it works. Bonus: It helps plants grow, too! :D

Excellent additive to grow plants

Having had FW plant systems for many years, I have addressed the ability of getting CO2 into the tank in many ways, from tablets, home made CO2 generators, CO2 injection systems with marginal success on all of them, not to mention the pain to keep them all replenished and waiting to be used also. I stumbled on Excel Organic Carbon additive by accident, and got a small bottle and tried it. Noticed within a few days, all plants responding by greening up and looking lots more perkier. After a month I knew I finally found the secret to growing aquatic plants, that was about two years ago. Since then I have 'harvested' about 100 Wendii's and sold them to pet stores. I started with 8 of them a couple of years before. All this from a 75 gal plant tank, took a bit of time to get dosage right, but I use two cap fulls a week of it and also have added the other Seachem additives to the mix as well. When you get the balance you will also see a reduction in the amount of algae your system generates, and plants that grow very nicely. This is the best additive I have ever seen for the planted aquarium.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Excel

  1. Thank you for your question. The Seachem Flourish Excel (item# 215052), does not contain iron.

Is Excel safe for Anacharis?

  1. Anacharis does well with Excel when following the recommended dosage.

Could dosing Excel in the aquarium INCREASE the likelyhood of brown diatom algae growing?

  1. Usually found in newly setup tanks due to silicates and ammonia as the filter and substrate have yet to mature. I would make sure you have biological media in your filter to ensure your tank is fully cycled. A quick Google search on Diatoms should point you in the right direction. I do not think that Excel will make it worse since it is an algaecide. Also ensure you are dosing macro nutrients with your micro nutrients and testing your water weekly.

what type of additives do i need. I have a saltwater tank with red algae, caulerpa prolifera, and shaving brush plant

  1. I would not advise using Excel in a saltwater aquarium, especially if you have live rock/coral.

Is flourish excel a replacement for flourish? Or should the two be used together?

  1. These two products should be used together. Excel supplements the CO2 source for plants while Flourish is used as a Micro nutrient supplement. I would also advise looking into purchasing Macro nutrients (NPK) to ensure you are not starving your plants and stunting/stopping their growth.

Flourish Excel dosage

  1. No, does not work the same. Follow the recommended dosing and you may increase dosing gradually overtime to fit your needs.

Replacement for CO2?

  1. Yes this is an alternative of using pressurized CO2. It does not work as well as pressurized CO2 and is not as cost effective, but it is much easier to use.

How long does the bottle last, once it's been opened?

  1. It should store for over two years as long as you store it correctly. Ensure the cap is secured firmly and the bottle is stored in a dark area. Natural light activates one of the main components so do not store it in a clear bottle.

Is flourish Excel safe with cherry shrimp & bristle nose plecos?

  1. Yes, follow the recommended dosage, you can increase it slightly overtime to meet your needs.
