Petromalt - WHY the horrible new formula?

I have been using Petromalt since 1973 and have loved it up until this new formula. What a waste. My cats loved the old flavor and would usually lick right off the tube. If they wouldn't eat it, it was easy to squeeze a line into their mouth and it would stick. NO MORE. I give a ZERO star rating for the new runny formula. I am here writing this right after yet another gooey disgusting mess on me, the cat, and my couch. Who knows how much went in, most just ran right out onto her long fur (the reason I need it.) What used to be a wonderful and easy to use tool in my cat care kit has become of nightmare and I am off to look for a new product until they come to their senses and return the product to its original effective form.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I have been using Petromalt hairball relief from PetCo. However, there is something wrong with this or it has changed. It comes out like water now and it makes it difficult to use. This seems like a waste of money to buy this produce. What has changed?

No, I do not recommend this product.

Cat won't touch it since tube was changed

Petromalt used to be a favorite treat for my cat when it came in the metal tube. He used to eagerly lick a 1" ribbon of the malt flavored variety right off the back of my hand. When I ran out and had to buy more, it came in a new plastic tube and all of a sudden, he's repulsed by it. He wants it so badly because he can smell the malt flavor but every time he gets the tiniest droplet on the tip of his tongue, he practically gags and has to walk away. I don't know what is different about it - perhaps it tastes like the plastic tube it comes in, or perhaps it's the change in the formula that make it so runny now. It used to hold its shape when squeezed out of the tube, but with this thinner version, it flattens and spreads out quickly and threatens to run off my hand. It's got a consistency similar to that of applesauce mixed with melted caramel - it would potentially result in a lot of sticky messes! He's never touched any other brands, apparently because of subtle flavor differences or maybe it's the plastic tubes the others have come in for years. I give him hairball control dry food and it helps, but it doesn't do the trick by itself. I'm terribly disappointed because now my cat will have to endure the awful episodes he has when a hairball has grown large enough to encroach upon his airway. Suddenly, it sounds like he's either about to suck it right into his lungs or suffocate trying to avoid it. He is visibly shaken and nearing panic when it happens, which makes me want to panic. I try to hide it so he will think he's okay, since he looks to me for reassurance. Believe me, this is nothing like the typical dry hacking that comes with a hairball. This is something in addition to that and it's frightening. Thankfully, I see it a lot less often. I feel like I'm left without any options to help the poor guy. He's been my constant companion since I adopted him 13 years ago. I'd really like to see the company bring back the original formula in the metal tube. Has anyone else had his problem?

No, I do not recommend this product.

Not the same as it was but still effective

This product has changed for the worse. The product was a thicker consistency but now it's a gooey, runny mess. Plus the packaging has changed to contain more plastic so that you have difficulty getting the last quarter of the product out of the tube. Lucky for me my cat loves it still as we raised her with it as a "treat" every night before bed. Very effective as a hairball preventative if you can get past the mess.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I've been using Petromalt for 20 years and my cats love the taste. I've never had a problem w/ hairballs. The tube used to be made of metal, like an old tube of toothpaste. Now it's made of plastic and even if you store it cap side up the paste oozes out quickly and is wasted. I've used over half the tube since I bought it 2 weeks ago. I would give this product 5 stars but the packaging ruins it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

My cats will not consume the new Petromalt... When will the Original Petromalt be brought back and how can it be identified?

  1. I have contacted them. This is their reply: Thank you for contacting Sergeant's Pet Care Products. We were truly sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the Sentry HC Petromalt Hairball Relief. Unfortunately, when these products were acquired, circumstances beyond our control required a slight formulation change. I have forwarded your concerns to our Quality Assurance Department. At this time we have started production of the original formulation of Petromalt, however cannot provide a specific time frame for availability. Once the original formulation of the Petromalt is available, the packaging will have a sticker identifying it as such.

I want to or purchase the original petromalt hairball relief

  1. Ask Petco on your order for the "old" or "original" formula. I received that one from them on my last order by requesting that.

can you give hairball medicine to a six week old kitten?

  1. Talk to your vet about this.
