My dog is a 3 year old, 26 pound beagle and was prescribed smz tmp 480 mg 2 times a day for 7 days for a UTI. I read this drug can be dangerous and it should only be 13 mg per pound. Is this drug safe and what dose and how long should my dog be taking this?

We are trying to determine if my dog is getting an overdose of SMZ-TMP. Pills are 480 mg and she’s getting 1.5 tablets. Vet gave SMZ960 "1 tab twice daily" (960x2) bloody diarrhea. I obeyed but online vet sites say *once* daily. I stopped after 5days . Dog losing interest in finishing food (1st time ever) & losing breath while eating; as if food is not going down. 30 min later, eats more. Diarrhea improving, but after pooping, dog normally jogs home, but layed down as if eliminating wore him out. Last year, had same bloody diarrhea, same vet (don't know prescription), but none of these issues. Thank you.

My 79 pound 11 year old lab was prescribed Sulfa/trimethoprim on Friday, 12/4/20, due to his left front leg swelling. 960 mg every 12 hrs. There is no sign of what caused his leg to swell. X-rays showed inflammation around the bone, but other than that, no signs of why. There is no change in the leg today, Sunday. The swelling has not gone to any other part of his body. Would the medication need more time to work? The swelling on his entire leg began overnight 12/3.
