I purchased this fixture about a year ago. It is very non-intrusive and is barely visible on the top of my turtle's tank.
I originally used the three legs included to suspend it above his basking platform. However, I was able to bring it closer when I attached it to a screen using the included hooks. The system works great and the lamp is very secure. I don't have to worry about it shifting or moving at all.
The fixture does get hot, but this isn't a surprise since it houses a heat lamp. I'm very pleased with the fixture after struggling to find a proper basking lamp for a long time.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Great little heat lamp

Bought this for my young ball pythons cage. I needed to be able to focus a small amount of heat to a basking area in his terrarium w/o adding a substancial amount of heat to the entire enclosure and this fixture achieves that easily. I've tried a few other basking bulbs but they all added to much extra heat to the ambient air temp. With this fixture using the 25w night red bulb, I maintain a basking are temp of ~95* but the rest of his terrarium stays at 85* +/- 1. And at nght it allowes the temp drop he needs... 76-78*.
As for the set-up, no parts were missing and it was fast and easy to install. The fixture come w/ 2 ways to mount it, 1st- a ring w/ 3 springs attached to it can be slid down the cord and seats arround the base of the socket. then the springs can be pulled snug and attatched to a screen top (my set-up) by simply hooking it through the screen. 2nd- For tanks that have a low screen top, they include 3 steel "legs" that can be attatched to the fixture via screws to raise the level of the lamp and or keep it from sitting directly on the screen. They raise the lamp 4".
In addition to all that, it's a small fixture. About 4" dia. and 3.5 " tall, so it doesn't take up alot of space on top of the terrarium or stick-out like a sore thumb.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Can this be used for Hermit Crabs -Zilla Mini Halogen Reptile Dome Heat Lamp
🞄10 years ago
Hermit crabs need a temperature between 70F-80F. At 12” the 25w Blue Day Halogen creates a circle of heat 12” in diameter or more that is above 80F with the center being closer to 90F. If your house sometimes falls below 70F a better method to bring heat for Hermit Crabs would be through a small under-tank heater. This will raise the temperature a little slower than the mini halogens you are currently looking at.

How long is the cord and is there either an on/off or dimmer switch?
The cord is 6' with an on/off switch a foot down the cord from the dome. There is no dimmer but I was planning on plugging mine into a cord with a dimmer switch.

does this work for a 2x2x2 mesh chameleon cage?(about 20 gal) if so, witch one?
Thank you for your question Hamsterxoxxx. This would work for your terrarium/cage. The smaller one is rated for up to 60 watt bulbs and should be adequate for your needs (although if you live in a cooler climate and find that you need a higher watt bulb you may need the larger one to provide enough heat in your open-air habitat. With this being a mesh habitat you may prefer to use a fixture that does not need to clip onto the edge of an aquarium and instead clips onto the mesh screen cover for added safety. For your specific habitat, I would recommend the Zilla Mini-Halogen fixture.
