All natural wood products leach tannins, which discolor water and reduce pH levels. To minimize this effect, soak wood in a separate container, and change water daily to remove excess tannins. When the water color goes from dark brown to a very light "tea" color (or clear), the wood is ready for your aquarium. Adding extra carbon to your aquarium filter can help to remove any remaining discoloration.

I purchased 6 Mopani, 2 large Mopani driftwood are good but 4 medium Mopani driftwood 1 is borderline acceptable, the other 3 ARE NOT Mopani driftwood, these are small, soft, flacking unknown wood (maybe small chance Malaysian driftwood). Not only those size are unacceptable but WRONG DRIFTWOOD??

No, I do not recommend this product.

i was doing a ton of comparison shopping on driftwood and growing disheartened at how expensive it seems to get a reasonably sized piece. ordered two large and one medium mopani for my 40 breeder and was blown away when they arrived. the two larges are WHOPPERS to the point where i might even only put just one inside the tank. the medium was also an excellent piece, its about as big as i was actually expecting the larges to be when i ordered. i cant imagine going through the hassle of trying to find the best driftwood prices again now that i know about this website. 5 stars all the way

Yes, I recommend this product.

Very Pleased

I ordered three pieces of the medium Mopani wood and two of the three are fantastic! The third one is just a slightly twisted long piece that is nearly straight but the other two are nice big chunks. One has a bunch of natural holes in it that small fish can swim through. I might have to sand down the edges of the holes a bit but I'm in love with the piece! The other will be a great grounding piece since its large and solid. These will be great to attach plants to. Now off to the forever soak while I get the rest of the tank ready for the little swimmers.

Yes, I recommend this product.

A Gamble, but Good Value

Whenever it comes to ordering driftwood, you're always making a gamble on what kind of piece you're getting, unless able to put notes in your order to describe the kind of piece you want or the seller makes sure they only send out nice artistic pieces, you won't really know what you're getting. Always keep this in mind when ordering. The piece I received (I ordered Large) wasn't exactly the shape I had hoped for, but nonetheless it had great color tones to it and was of decent size. Suffice to say my Ball Python is gonna be happy either way. My only complaint on the piece would be that one part of it was a clean cut, obviously from when they cut the wood down so it didn't look natural but I am able to at least conceal it. Overall I'm pretty happy about the purchase.

Worse tannin leaching I've ever seen and slimey, too.

Very nice looking pc of driftwood, love the two colors, VERY reasonably priced, perfect size for a focal object in a small aquarium. However, I don't know if it will ever be usable. I boiled it, soaked it for 2 wks, changing water twice a day, put it in the tank and took it out 2 days later. Water was so brown, I couldn't see the fish, the plants, NOTHING!. All driftwood leaches tannins, some more than others, but this Mopani stuff is the worst I've ever come across. Also, it had a THICK white slime over the entire piece when I took it out. I have NO idea what that was all about! Again, something I've never encountered with other driftwood. Really gross!! I'll probably drop it in my rain barrel this spring, leave it there until fall, then maybe try it in the aquarium one more time. So, despite the positives I mentioned at the beginning, because of the terrible tannin output and the thick slime that deveoped, I will likely never buy Mopani driftwood again.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Big, solid, beautiful

I bought one of the large pieces for my 55 gal freshwater aquarium (Angelfish and Pleco). This was no flimsy cut of wood. I was surprised at the weight of the piece I ordered. It was very solid! The way this piece was cut gave a lot of space for my pleco to hang out under. She was using a coconut husk for her home but quickly abandoned it for this Mopani wood. The piece is absolutely beautiful! Mopani is known as being two-toned. But I can see at least three different shades in this piece. I wish I could personally thank the person who actually cut it. I do advise scrubbing the wood in very hot water. I use a canister filter with carbon filter media so I don't see discoloration from the tannins. So, I can't comment on that topic. But, this piece did come a bit dirty (natural type of dirty tho). I just scrubbed it all over with my algae brush and rinsed with very hot water. I repeated this process 4 times. I stopped when there was no more debris. I let it cool and then put it in the tank. I wish I could share a picture....

Yes, I recommend this product.

I placed an order of one small two medium and two large. Out of the three I liked the medium pieces the best. Color and shape outstanding. Not a fan of the larger ones due to more block shape and takes longer to cure before placing in my tank. I highly recommend the small and medium sizes over the large ones.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

Would a typical medium piece fit in a 10 gallon tank?

  1. Yes but it may be too big, they are very nice. a 10 gallon with a 12 inch or so piece of wood is ging to look large in thre may want to get the small, its a good size as well.

What is the width of the various sizes?

  1. If you just measured across it would 3 to 4 inches or wider in places, each one is different.

How long does it take MOPANI DRIFTWOOD to stop causing the water to become acidotic

  1. Thank you for your question. If you have had the driftwood in your aquarium for a year, it should no longer be effecting your water chemistry and more than likely something else is causing the pH.

Does the Driftwood stay down or does it need to be anchored by say a piece of slate

  1. These are heavy pieces that stay down even before soaking. No need to anchor them. They do have a lot of tannins that will leach into the water and turn it a tea color; so it's a good idea to boil the wood and/or soak it for (at least) several days in hot water until you notice that the water lightens up. I did this and mine still turned my water yellow. It doesn't bother me too much but I'm hoping with more water changes and new carbon in the filter that this will take care of it. The tannins won't hurt your fish, but I've read that it may slightly lower your PH and Water Hardness - still not a problem.

How much will a "large" piece of mopani driftwood weigh?

  1. I ordered two pieces. One weighs close to twenty pounds the other probably weighs 12-15. So the average is somewhere in the teens is my guess.

amount of driftwood recommended for an aquarium

  1. You can do whatever you want. Mix in rockwork as well, start with a few pieces and order more as you feel you need. I keep a tote full of wood of different sizes and shapes to use in tanks.

I use purigen in my HOB filter. Will it remove the tannins the wood releases into the water?

  1. Purigen will soak up the tannins, just be prepared to treat it more frequently for a while until most of the tannins are gone.

Is it possible something in this wood is causing Pictus catfish irritation?

  1. Thank you for your question. As long as the Driftwood is soaked (cured), it will not cause any illness in the aquarium.

i NEED SOME TALL PIECES COULD I REQUEST SOME WITH HEIGHT OR ARE THEY GIVEN RANDOMLY?

  1. Thank you for your question. Unfortunately this is a natural product and we cannot offer special requests for this item.

Is mopani wood safe for goldfish (30 gallon tank) and neon tetras (20 gallon tank)?

  1. Thank you for your question. This product is safe to use in a tank with neon tetras.
