Hi. What are possible side effects of penicillimine? My mixed breed dog has Chronic hepatitis (asymptomatic), very high liver enzymes, severe copper storage seen in liver biopsy. Vet plans to use penicillimine for chelation therapy and keep feeding homecooked diet. Are organic foods better than nonorg. for less copper? Do you know of a particular water brand with low or no copper? Thank you.

From Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook: In dogs, the most prevalent adverse effects associated with penicillamine are: -Nausea, vomiting, and depression. While penicillamine should be given on an empty stomach (at least 30 minutes before feeding), if the animal develops problems with vomiting or anorexia, four remedies have been suggested: -Give the same total daily dose, but divide into smaller individual doses and give more frequently. -Temporarily reduce the daily dose and gradually increase to recommended dosage. -Give a long-acting antiemetic one-hour before dosing. -Give with a small amount of food (e.g., cheese or bread) if one of the first three do not alleviate vomiting. -Although thought infrequent or rare, fever, lymphadenopathy, skin hypersensitivity reactions, or immune-complex glomerulonephropathy may occur. A case of hemolytic anemia in a cat has been reported. -Penicillamine can reduce GI dietary mineral (zinc, iron, copper, and calcium) absorption and cause deficiencies with long-term use. Pyridoxine deficient states may occur; supplementation advised. Dietary restriction of copper intake is an important part of therapy but does not replace copper chelation if excessive copper storage is already present. Dietary copper is restricted to <5 mg/kg (ppm, dry matter basis). Most puppy and adult dog foods contain 15-25 mg/kg (ppm, dry matter basis). Prescription hepatic diets contain lower levels of copper. For example, Hills L/D contains 4.9 mg/kg copper (ppm, dry matter basis). Organic diets may or may not have an appropriate copper level - being organic does not necessarily mean it is healthier. You may want to contact your local municipal authority or water utility company to inquire about mineral contents. Copper level could also be increased if you house uses copper pipes. you can get your water tested. If the water contains more than 100 micrograms per liter, then bottled demineralized water should be used. This water should contain only 1 microgram of copper per liter. Demineralized water and distilled water are processed differently and may not contain the same amount of copper. I am not aware of the specific copper contents of different brands, you may have to call the information number for a specific brand to ask about the copper contents.

At what age can I start giving my dog glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for her hips and joints? Since she is a German shepherd and the breed is predisposed to hip and joint issues? Or would feeding a food with glucosamine and chindroitin in it help to postpone the supplements for later on?

Hello and thank you for choosing Boop by Petco! Since glucosamine and chondroitin fall under the category of medications we refer to as nutraceuticals (fancy word for supplements) there is no specific age that is recommended. Generally, we start recommend using these types of medications when pets reach the senior stage (7+ years of age). Since Bella is still young, I would recommend feeding a quality food that is formulated specifically for large breed dogs as it will include all of the beneficial joint health additives. I am personally a fan of Purina foods, but any of the other brands (Hills, Royal Canin, etc) are all excellent foods. This way you don't have to worry about trying to remember giving Bella pills everyday and nothing in her routine has to change. The supplements may be needed further down the road. Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck to you and Bella!

Baby bird is shivering after I hand fed it.

If your baby bird doesn't have all his feathers in yet, he could still be having a hard time regulating temperature. Feeding food that is chilled or too cold may cause his temperature to decrease some, causing the shivering. Making sure the food is room temperature and that your baby bird is in a warm enough environment can help. However, if the shivering continues or if you see any other signs of illness it is best to have it checked out by a vet.

I have a cockatiel bird and I noticed his poop has blood on it, is that normal?

Hello. Blood in the droppings is not normal. This could signify an serious infection of the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, or reproductive tract since birds have a single common opening for all 3 systems (the cloaca). Other possible causes of blood would be a retained or broken egg, heavy metal toxicity, foreign body, trauma, or a bleeding tumor. Whatever the underlying cause, it is potentially serious and requires a thorough assessment and treatment by a veterinarian. One thing I have seen is birds that have recently eaten red berries or other red food may pass droppings that may resemble blood. If Angel hasn’t recently (within 12-24 hours) eaten anything very red, then i would take her to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Good luck.

I got a baby betta fish and was wondering how do I care for it : as in habitat , water changes , feeding and heating

Mushu is very cute! Betta care is very easy. Ideally, a 5 gallon tank should be used to house your Betta. A smaller tank can be used, but the maintenance (water changes) will be much more frequent. A filter is always recommended otherwise water changes will be required every few days to maintain water quality. With a filter, 20% water changes can be done weekly or every two weeks. Use only aged or conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Choices for conditioners include AmQuel Plus, NovAqua, StressCoat, Prime or StressZyme. A small submersible heater is necessary since Bettas are tropical fish. They do best in slow moving water between 78F and 80F. You can feed a pelleted diet such as Hikari Micro Pellets until he grows bigger. Baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms and blackworms can also be fed. Feed one or twice daily. He should only need 2-3 pellets at each feeding. The conditioners and food can be found in the aquarium section of the local Petco. Please request a consultation to discuss care in greater depth or post another question in the Forum if necessary.

How much does it cost to bring a hamster to a vet?

It does depend on where you live but on average I would say an exam is about $30-70, but could be higher for an exotic specialist. If you are on a budget, it is worth calling around your area - and I would also ask if they are comfortable treating hamsters as not all vets are! I hope this helps!

i believe my red eared slider turtle may have a bit of shell rot. I was having issues with his filter and his water would get dirty every two days, I did get this resolved. His shell is a purple color on the outside of the shell and had two white spots i was wondering what i could get to treat it?

Maintain water quality and provide UVB lighting, vitamin/mineral supplementation and a healthy diet. You can clean spots of minor rot using a soft bristled toothbrush and diluted betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Allow for a 1-2 hour dry dock (keep Franklin out of the water) after each cleaning. If the rot does not resolve or if it worsens, see your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet.

My hamster has something on her skin and I noticed that it was more little a few weeks ago.. what could it be?

Thanks for reaching out about Millie and including photos. Hamsters get wart-like keratin growths that are rarely painful but can get quite large. A veterinary visit can assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.

My hamster got bald on her butt, something like losing hair on bottom parts. Is she sick ? How can I treat her sickness ?

Hi there, I'm sorry your little hamster is having trouble. Hair loss can be from a number of things- skin parasites like skin mites are very common in these guys. Also, there can be hair loss from endocrine diseases , overgrooming from stress or other things. Your vet can test your friend for parasites and then prescribe a safe medicine that you can use. Over the counter meds, such as dog and cat flea products, would be too strong and could hurt your pet. if it is not parasites, they can check to see what else might be going on.

Hi my rabbit is currently losing fur around his eye and I am unsure of what may be causing the fur loss, he is nearly 3years and is neutered. Is this something I should be worried about, he is eating and going to toilet just seems a little irritated. Thankyou

Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis and eyelid inflammation, probably secondary to an infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Hope this answer was helpful, but please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further. Can dog eat fish eggs? I didn't find the answers in google so I'm asking you guys. We will boil it. Rohu eggs. Please do answer with proper reason. Thanks

Fully cooked fish eggs can be a good source of protein and a part of a balanced diet for dogs. They are not a sufficient sole source of nutrition. A dog eating only fish eggs will likely develop nutritional deficiencies. Raw fish eggs are likely to carry food born illnesses and should be avoided.

What’s the difference between reptile water conditioner and any other kind of water conditioner life fish

Reptile water conditioner usually contains chemicals such as Water, Dechloraminating Agents, Synthetic Organic Polymers (Colloids), Chelating Agents, Electrolytes. The reptile conditioner usually also has a chemical that binds calcium in the water as well as a slime protecting agent that is good for amphibians and fish. Aquarium water conditioners (for fresh water fish) contains chemicals such as sulfates such as sodium thiosulfate. Thiosulfate is a Redox reducing agent. Either should be ok for reptiles or fish, however I would stick with reptile conditioner for reptile tanks or mixed (reptile and fish) tanks and for aquaria with fish only I would use specific aquarium water conditioner. The main reason to use a water conditioner is to remove chlorine in water. This, however, can also be attained by leaving the aquarium water fresh from the tap sitting over night. The chlorine will dissipate.

Your hamster is suffering from abnormal dentition, the lower incisors teeth are much too long compared to the upper ones. you need to get her to the vet to have the lower front incisors cut, the upper one that fell will regrow very soon.
