It’s important to feed your parrot more than just bird pellets. Food like leafy greens, fruit and vegetables provide vital nutrition to your bird. In nature, a parrot feeds on things like bananas, grasses and even insects to maintain their nutrient levels. Learn more about how to care for your parrot in our Pet Resource Center.
Pellets for parrots may be convenient for humans, but they’re often a little tough on your bird’s digestive system. They may put their food in water to soften it up and make it easier for them to digest.
You should feed your parrot twice a day. Most species cannot live more than a day or two without eating, and it’s vital to supply quality bird food to ensure their health. It’s also a good idea to remove any uneaten fruit, veggies or parrot pellet food after each feeding to avoid leaving spoiled fruit, vegetables or seed around.
Baby parrots need to eat soft food—not only for digestion but because their beaks aren’t quite strong enough to break apart seeds and skins like their parents. Feeding a baby parrot at home means you’ll need much more than pelleted bird food. Soft or soaked seeds, cooked corn, soft fruit and vegetables and small greens are all healthy options for your baby bird. Just be sure to consult your vet to make sure any new foods are suitable for your parrot species.
